The county of Vechta and also Steinfeld is continuously been inhabited since 3000 years.

That has proofed the excavations of the year 1995 which are from the Bronze Age. The huge stone graves in Visbek and Steinfeld are even older, older as the Egyptian pyramids.

3000 years does our homeland exist.  This may explain the perseverance of the people, which stay for generations on their farms at the same place.

The Romans got defeated in the year 9 p.c. by our forefathers close to Steinfeld that shows the excavations in Kalkriese  and the newly opened museum, despite the monument for this event is standing in the Teutoburger Wald 50 km away from this location. (Hermannsdenkmal)

Our Forefathers fought also for Napoleon in Russia. When the soldiers of Napoleon passed our area and saw the people digging black peat moss squares they told at home “ This people are so poor, they have to eat peat moss” they never had seen the black bread before what is eaten  in our area since ancient times and is on the market until today as “Pumpernickel”. You can even find it on the supermarket shelves in Australia.

The first church in Steinfeld was built around the 11th century. It was the center of the new developing village Steinfeld.  There where no benches in the church.  The people walked around and talked with each other.  Everything happened here in the church. The lawyers did their business, markets where going and young people met here.  They did not visit the church more times on Sunday, also during the weeks they went to this meeting place.  Pubs where unknown and so they had to meet each other in the church.

Today the biggest and famous wooden carved “Last Supper” (made after Leonardo da Vinci’s painting, original is in Milano) of the world is displayed above the altar of the St. Johannes church in Steinfeld.  Also the let stained church windows are worth to look at. The old pipe organ is a Fuehrer organ well known for the beautiful sound. The church bells, especially when the big Marian bell is involved, can be heard in far distance
